The people no institution will take in
Ni Aasre Da Aasra began with one man. In 2018 our founder Jaskirat Singh found a man near a railway station whose hands had been amputated, living on the ground, unable to feed himself. There was nowhere to take him. That is why this shelter exists.
Many of our residents today live with a physical disability, an intellectual disability, or both — amputations, paralysis, blindness, cerebral palsy, severe mental illness. These are precisely the people other institutions turn away, because the care is expensive, slow and never finishes.
A person with a serious disability who is living destitute cannot survive on the street. They cannot move away from danger and cannot reach a hospital. When they are picked up, most institutions refuse them for want of capacity or trained staff. Our shelter accepts them without condition.
