The hands that once held us are now trembling for care

The largest group of people we rescue are elderly. They are found at bus stands, outside temples, at railway platforms and on the roadside — often ill, often disoriented, usually alone. Some walked away during an episode of dementia and could not find their way back. Many have been on the street long enough that they no longer remember their own name.

Ni Aasre Da Aasra gives them a permanent home. Not a night shelter or a transit stop, but a place to live out their years with a bed, medicine, food, and someone who knows their name.

Why this is needed

An elderly person in this condition has no route back into any system. Hospitals discharge them with nowhere to go. Old age homes ask for documents, a fee and a family signature — none of which they have. Police who find someone like this have very few places they can take them, which is why police stations across Haryana and the neighbouring districts now call us directly.

What we do

• Round-the-clock rescue. A call from a police station, a hospital or a member of the public brings our team out. We collect the person whatever their condition, and we do not ask for documents first.
• Medical stabilisation. Most arrive malnourished and carrying untreated wounds or infections. Treatment begins the day they arrive.
• A permanent home. Bed, bedding, clothing, three meals a day, bathing support, and daily nursing for those who cannot move on their own.
• Continuing medication for diabetes, blood pressure, tuberculosis and mental health conditions — supplied for as long as it is needed, not once.
• Dignity in daily life. Haircuts, clean clothes, festivals observed, and staff who sit and talk with residents rather than only feeding them.
• Family tracing. We keep trying to find their people, for years if necessary, and help them go home when a safe home is found.
